What Are Quilters Blogging About Today?

Today I want to share the finish of this pretty coin quilt. This quilt started out on a whim one day a couple of months ago. I was cleaning my sewing room and attacked a pile of scraps, cutting them into rectangles measuring 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″. I decided to concentrate on specific colors and then use the rectangles at a later date for a coin quilt. Green, yellow, pink and blue were the colors I selected.

Somehow May is just flying by! I haven’t posted since April but with good reason. Now that our family is vaccinated we have had lots and lots and LOTS of family time. Like many of you, we are making up for all of the lost time over the past year or so. It has been heavenly.

I think this is the first coin quilt I have made and I love it. It is simple, pretty, and has lovely color. This project consumed a nice pile of scraps, most of which were given to me by my sister.

In January I spent some time cutting pink, green, blue and yellow scraps into strips measuring 2 1/2″ x 5″. Then I made myself put them away and finish a few other projects before playing with these. When I was ready to sew the coin quilt, it was great to just pull the bag of strips off the ...

That pile of scraps has become two baby quilts.

They are about 35″ x 37″. And it is fun to see them side by side.

They still need quilting, but soon…

The bits and pieces of a jelly roll project are continuing to take shape.

Into a coin quilt…

I am pleased so far. The frame gives a distinctive look.

And helps to hide tiny differences in the width of the strips.

In old-timey movies, the wealthy are surrounded by teetering stacks of gold coins. So, my little-kid self believed that’s what riches were. 

A “few” decades later, I find myself surrounded instead with stacks of fabric. And in my book…that’s even better! 

This week Jenny is whipping up a classic coin quilt with a fun new twist. First, she makes traditional coin stacks out of jelly roll strip sets. Then, she uses the Missouri Star Circle Magic template to add a sprinkling of easy applique circles. The end result is a totally new pattern that is truly out-of-this-world ...

Next, arrange the 2-1/2″ x 4-1/2″ rectangles (or groups of rectangles) into sets of 15. This will create a larger strip 4-1/2″ x 30-1/2″.

Then stitch them together.

Only a few steps to go.

Using all possible previously sewn seams makes a difference. Each of those seams feels like a gift from another quilter. Quilts like this stitch us together as much as we stitch them together.

Once I started working on the jelly roll leftovers, I realized there was enough to make TWO coin style baby quilts, plus some leftover for another idea.

So, I cut all the pieces I could into strips 4-1/2″ wide.

And set the leftovers aside to be cut into 2-1/2″ squares, or sets, where possible. Smaller pieces will be cut into 2″ and 1-1/2″ squares.

Using every bit practical (NOTE: I didn’t say “every bit possible” because I have my limit, and that limit, most of the time, is 1-1/2″. Everyone needs to choose their own ...

These jelly roll leftovers came in a scrap bag. After the last batch, I vowed to take some process pictures of making a quilt with the leftovers.
